Effects of Urbanization on Forest Biodiversity in Alabama

Reference Type
Conference Proceedings (Chapter)

"Diversity is one of the major factors defining stability and efficient functioning of forest ecosystems. Maintaining biodiversity is important for sustainable forest management. Urbanization is an important factor affecting biodiversity.  This paper analyses the diversity of tree species in Alabama forests. Shannons diversity index (Shannon and Weaver, 1963) is used as the indicator of biodiversity. An index was calculated for tree species diversity on each FIA sample plot. Influence of biological, climatic and anthropogenic factors during the period 1972-2000 is analyzed using regression analysis. Explanatory variables in the regressions included forest type, stand origination, DBH, volume, site class, physiographic region, ownership, and population gravity index. Population gravity index was determined using ArcGIS software and related to each FIA plot using its geographic coordinates." [Abstract from Conference Program and Book of Abstracts]
