Trees of Pennsylvania: A Complete Reference Guide

Reference Type
Book (Entire)

This is an excellent tree identification resource for the Pennsylvania (and mid-Atlantic) area. The photographs are very high quality and particularly helpful for visual identification. In addition, keys are provided for both summer (leaf) and winter (twig) identification.

Range maps are based on herbarium collections for Pennsylvania, but the source for ranges in adjacent states is not indicated. Ranges for some species in Ohio are suspect, but this may be a function of the definition of "native".

An appendix includes 10 very useful tree lists. For example:

Native Trees That Are Important Food Sources for Moths & Butterflies

Small- to Moderate-Size Native Trees with Conspicuous Flowers

Trees that or near the Southern/Northern/Eastern Limit of Their Natural Range

Native Wetland Trees

Native Trees of Riparian Forests
