The authors "first examine the potential impacts of a new suburbanization pattern--the edge city--on natural and social systems. Second, they present an ecological framework for studying and managing urban and urbanizing landscapes based upon approaches and concepts adopted by the Baltimore and Phoenix long-term ecological research projects.
