British urban forestry in transition - developments between 1993-1998, Part II

Reference Type
Journal, Research (Article)

At the same time as the urban forestry movement was losing momentum, the arboricultural industry and profession was undergoing a period of severe disruption and change. While this crisis in arboriculture did not involve many individuals in the urban forestry movement, most of whom were not arboriculturists, it has enormous significance for professionals involved in urban tree management. An understanding of these events helps to explain why arboriculturists played no significant role in the urban forestry movement in the early 1990s, and why the profession was not in a position to give leadership to the movement when it had lost momentum. Developments within the profession were also to have an increasing significance as urban forestry in Britain became more closely associated with arboriculture. Although this crisis within arboriculture had been building for some time, it first surfaced publicly in 1993. For convenience, the entire episode is covered in this paper. [UMN]
