Dutch elm disease control: economics of girdling diseased elms to improve sanitation performance

Early detection and immediate girdling plus prompt removal (within 20 work days) of diseased elms saved more elms at a lower cost than sanitation practices in which diseased elms were just removed promptly or were allowed to remain standing into the dormant season.
