The Right stuff: managing trees as green infrastructure on military installations

Reference Type
Conference Proceedings (Chapter)

Describes a partnership between the U.S. Air Force and TreesAmerica, Inc. to enhance the benefits of the urban forest resource for energy conservation, storm water runoff reduction, and to improve the quality of life on defense installations. [UMN]

"The average Air Force base includes about 13,000 landscape trees that constitute an important component of installation infrastructure. The Air Force has partnered with TreesAmerica, Inc. on a program aimed at enhancing the benefits of the urban forest resource for energy conservation, storm water runoff reduction, and its contribution to enhancing the quality of life on defense installations by providing a more desirable place to live and work. For this purpose, The Air Force and TreesAmerica have recently developed an Urban Tree Inventory System (UTIS) to help identify and execute the priority actions needed to enhance the urban forest resource. By efficiently managing trees as green infrastructure, the Air Force installations are moving towards becoming model communities of environmental excellence." [Abstract]
