Tree Investment Brings Cities Many Happy Returns

This article describes the value and status of the urban forest in Seattle, WA.

While urban forests provide many surprising and helpful benefits, conserving this natural resource and convincing local business owners of its worth is no easy task.  Trees provide many indirect values.  Research shows that, psycologically, having nature near by helps people cope with stress and anxiety, as well as benefiting child development" [page 1].  Urban vegetation also plays a direct role in stormwater management problems by absorbing rainfall and reducing runoff.  The great number and diversity of benefits from the urban forest will only be possible if it is "managed and planned comprehensively and as a 'green infrastructure'." [page 3]

"The Puget Sound region has historically had strong economic ties to its trees and forests.  Today, the regional econonomy has diversified but trees are no less important.  Investment in the urban forest is essential to create and sustain the habitat of commerce." [page 3]
