This article describes and suggests a variety of ways to economically assess the benefits of community trees.
The public enjoys and benefits from urban forests in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, maintaing this resources "requires ongoing planning, management, and maintenance, and these activities incur certain costs" [page 1]. This article provides an introduction to how economists, social scientists, and environmental scientists evaluate urban tree benefits. In the case of the urban forest, costs are easily evaluated, but evaluating the provided benefits, many of which are intangible, poses a more complicated process. As such, the article provides a suggestion as to how a "more complete understanding of urban tree and forest valuation could be used for policy and decision making" [page 1].
