Cooling the Urban Forest
A creative film directed towards younger children that describes the benefits of trees and their ability to decrease electric bills.
This video is a part of a series that works to educate children (middle school to junior high)about nature. In the VHS, two children meet with an extravagant professor to learn why their electrical bills are so high. The professor discusses all of the ways trees help cool surrounding areas. The heat island effect decreases as trees transpire moisture into the atmosphere. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide, cooling down the area. The professor also shows how trees can be used as wind breaks to decrease household heating bills in the winter. By using the scientific approach, this film teaches children to appreciate trees in their urban environment. 13:00 minutes
