Development of community forest policy in England: delivering public benefits on the urban fringe

This paper provides a brief synopsis of the background to the Community Forest Programme, sets out what it is trying to achieve, and what the experience has been of the economic appraisal process. The Community Forest Programme is a joint initiative of the Forestry Commission and the Countryside Commission in partnership with 60 local authorities. The initiative aims to create well-wooded countryside around towns and cities to provide a better environment in which people can work, live and spend their leisure time.
