Fuel reduction options for landowners at the wildland-urban interface

Abstract: The tranquility and natural setting of wildland areas are characteristics that are appealing to many who desire to leave the congestion and fast pace of the city. These appeals, coupled with the need to grow due to increases in population, have resulted in an urban sprawl that has placed many homes at the wildland-urban interface. A primary threat to these homes is damage or destruction from wildland fire. Landowners can reduce their risk by utilizing a number of methods dealing with the materials used to construct their home, the landscape design and maintenance, and by mitigating hazardous fuels. This technical report contains: a literature review that describes various fuel mitigation techniques; a study plan, describing current research investigating various fuel management techniques; an extension publication draft that identifies fuel mitigation techniques, their effectiveness, cost and applicability to parcels of differing size; and an extension publication draft identifying factors that should be considered when selection landscaping plants, and their arrangement and maintenance.
