Abstract: Activities that transform the landscape, such as rapid conversion of agricultural to residential land use in Colorado, are resulting in habitat loss and fragmentation. The goal of this paper is to offer some insights into tools that can be used to measure habitat fragmentation, and more generally, landscape pattern. First, I will define habitat fragmentation and describe criteria to judge the utility of landscape measures or metrics. Next, I will review a couple of the more commonly available tools for measuring landscapes and conclude with some suggestions for future directions.
