Through the flames: An assessment of Florida's wildfires of 1998

Author: The Governor's Wildfire Response and Mitigation Review Committee
Date: 1998
Periodical: [FL]: Lewis, Philip D., committe chairman ; Report of the Governor's Wildfire Response and Mitigation Review Committee
Abstract: The severity of the 1998 wildfires prompted Governor Chiles to appoint a special committee of government officials, technical experts, members of the public and other stakeholders to asses the situation and to formulate a series of recommendations on how Florida could better manage its wildfire risk. The committee has provided Florida with ninety recommendations for actions in the key areas of: Wildfire emergency response, wildfire recovery, and prevention and mitigation of the impacts of wildfires. These recommendations focus on all levels of government in Florida, and are directed at making the impact of the next major wildfire event substantially less than the disaster of 1998. Implementation of the recommendations will be the key to lessening Florida's future human and economic vulnerability to major wildfires, and to ensuring that the State is fully prepared to effectively respond to and recover from the next major wildfire.
