Abstract: The Urban Ecosystem: A Holistic Approach is the result of an intensive interdisciplinary examination of the city. This two-part document is the work of approximately 90 specialists from various natural and social sciences who gathered to discuss the city and its problems in a new and, hopefully, useful way, i.e. as an ecosystem. In the past, interdisciplinary work in urban studies has been limited and the \"ecosystem\" principles which may underlie the structure and functioning of the urban system have received only incidental attention. The initial and primary assumption of the workshop organizers and participants is that to view the city as one would view a natural ecosystem may provide useful and valuable insights into the nature and problems of American cities, and that, further, such an approach may lead to solutions to urban problems. The Urban Ecosystem: A Holistic Approach provides little \"new\" data on the city; rather, it attempts to correlate and integrate existing knowledge. The book, in providing a framework for future urban studies, attempts to highlight and clarify the principles underlying urban system function. As a breakthrough effort to create a framework appropriate to comprehensive urban study, the book is an early step towards definition of a new multi-disciplinary field of study.
