Abstract: During and immediately following preparation of the 1982 analysis of the timber situation in the United States (USDA Forest Service 1982), the forestry community of the nation and southern region became concerned about timber growth and inventory trends in the south. One result of this concern was the study of the timber resource in the southern region by the United States Forest Service. The results of that study are published in "The South's Fourth Forest: Alternatives for the Future" (USDA Forest Service 1988).The general goal of the "Southern Timber Supply Study" was... to learn how the South achieved its vastly if not wholly favorable, timber position over the past several decades and how this trend could be continued" (USDA For Ser 1988).The goals of this report are: to describe the current role of the forest resource in the economy of Oklahoma. To present projected changes in the Oklahoma timber resource from the "Southern Timber Supply Study" and the economic and social implications of these changes for the state. To present the economic opportunities for increasing timber supplies in Oklahoma from the "Southern Timber Supply Study." To present a program that will allow Oklahoma to capture the economic potential of the state's forest resource. For a better description of the impact of the forest resource on the economy of Oklahoma, the 18 eastern counties have been separated as a distinct region within the state, and the role of the forest resource is this region is then discussed.
