Abstract: Chapters in this volume and the Lowland Communities volume (Martin et al. 1993) included descriptions of the diversity of biotic communities of the southeastern United States. Use, management, and threats to the perpetuation of specific ecosystems have been described. In this final chapter, we briefly examine some of the major changes expected into the 21st century. Our short discussion of population growth and land use is general and recognizes only some of the major features of these complex issues as they will affect all levels of biodiversity in the future. We forecast directions for community-level biodiversity by briefly reviewing the status of communities discussed in this volume. We also attempt to identify some conservation strategies for conserving community and landscape biodiversity. We end by identifying some research needs and opportunities that apply across the region.
