Abstract: Did you ever stop to think where we would be today without computers? What would happen if all the mainframes, personal computers, networks, and software packages suddenly were unavailable? There might be a few scattered cheers, but for most of us, our ability to deal with today's complex problems and demands would be diminished. Our profession, like many others, has made good use of new computer-related technologies. But how did we get to this point, and why have some individuals and organizations used this technology to their advantage sooner than others? Part of the answer lies in the process of technology transfer, or putting research results into practice.
