Task force teaches the benefits of firewise landscaping

Date: 1994
Periodical: National Fire Protection Association Journal
Abstract: A firewise landscaping task force, sponsored by the National Wildland/Urban Interface Protection Program, is hoping to motivate people who own homes in interface areas to re-examine their landscaping and take precautions to protect life and property from fire. according to The Gale Wye newsletter Proper landscaping can decrease fire risk and preserve the values that prompt people to live in interface areas in the first place. Despite numerous disastrous fires in recent years however, few people have made firewise landscaping decisions. Since 1992, the task force has been developing materials that target a wide audience. Workshops are being designed for landscape architects, contractors, and maintenance personnel. Eventually, the workshops will also target nurserymen, city planners, developers, and insurance companies. The task force is also designing short videos that demonstrate the basic elements of firewise landscape design.
