Saving the farm: A handbook for conserving agricultural land

Author: American Farmland Trust
Date: 1990
Periodical: Davis, CA: American Farmland Trust, Western Office
Abstract: Despite the increased interest in preserving farmland there is a lack of information on farmland preservation options available to local governments and private landowners. This handbook was prepared to provide that information. It is intended to be both a summary of the tools and techniques for farmland conservation and a "how to" book for those wishing to implement a local farmland conservation program. The objectives of this handbook are to: describe the range of farmland conservation options, serve as a guide for the creation and implementation of local farmland conservation policies and programs, provide examples of existing policies and programs that can serve as successful models, and be a sourcebook of public agencies, private organizations, and information related to farmland conservation. This handbook will be useful to: local governments-Boards of Supervisors, City Councils, Planning Commissions, Planning Departments and LAFCos; farmers, ranchers, and landowners; private organizations and citizen groups-agricultural, environmental and land conservation. We hope that this handbook will be useful for those who are seeking to preserve farmland in their community. In the coming months and years we intend to provide updates and additional inserts to the handbooks so that they reflect the "state of the art" in farmland conservation. We welcome your comments and wish you luck in achieving the preservation of farmland in your community.
