Ozone potential damage and agriculture susceptibility in Milan

Abstract: The present work is the practical application of an agricultural planning scheme, worked out in order to reduce the harm caused to agriculture by different levels of atmospheric pollution in a region, with special regard to ozone (O3). First of all, it is necessary to set up a primary data base, represented by functions relating O3 concentration to agricultural production loss. In this specific case, agricultural production value of Milan's southern belt, excluding its part due to animal breeding, was split up into single crops. The economic relevance of every crop in a territory unit worked as a weighting factor of percent harm caused to the same crop at increasing ozone concentrations, according to its dose/response function. Thus, graphic representations of the harm caused by different 03 levels to agriculture in each commune could be obtained. Agricultural susceptibility to O3 means here the predisposition to undergo O3 damage, merely as a consequence of crop diffusion in the area. Once so stated, indexes can be found, expressing it as a function either of percent or of absolute damage. Such information can easily be transferred onto a map and be managed by a GIS (Geographical Information System), jointly together with many more territory data. This can be usefully utilized in the attempt to foresee the effects a highly polluting settlement may cause in a mainly agricultural area.
