Abstract: This chapter has two objectives: to provide the reader with an overview of the fire-related challenges facing those who live in the wildland-urban interface and the importance of cooperation between these residents and the agencies/organizations charged with managing fire where people and wildlands meet, and to describe some emerging or current strategies these agencies and organizations are using to mange fire hazards and fire itself in the broadly defined wildland-urban interface. We emphasize the importance of both community and the individual landowner responsibilities and actions in preparing for the inevitability of fire in wildland ecosystems. A brief discussion of the ecological role and necessity of fire in fire-adapted ecosystems and the impacts of fire suppression on these functions will provide an important starting point for the rest of this chapter.
