Abstract: The 2000 fires came at a time of increasing debate about forest management policies and firefighting strategies. And although destructive--577 structures were destroyed and eight lives were lost--the fires need to be understood as the product of both the region's ecology and the disruption of the West's natural fire cycles. * For the increasing number of Westerners choosing to live in or near wildfire country, understanding these truths may indeed make all the difference.
