Land, water and development: Sustainable management of river basin systems. 2d ed.

Author: Newson, Malcolm
Date: 1997
Periodical: New York, NY: Routledge
Abstract: The management of the environment is under increasing pressure to conserve systems and pursue a sympathetic approach. This despite the increasing demands of population, agriculture, industrialization and public concern for human rights. Historically, the sector of the environment most affected by human development has been the river. In the second edition of Land, Water and Development, Malcom Newson explores the meaning of sustainability in river basin development; the ecosystem model is made more explicit than in the first edition. The rapid evolution of practical concepts of sustainable river management since the ‘Earth Summit’ in 1992 is charted for a number of countries. New national case studies include those of Australia, South Africa, Israel and Iran. The links between land and water management are strengthened and it is concluded that the catchment management planning, incorporating wide public consultation, is the best device by which river managers can influence sustainable development. The book contains sections on water and sediment transfer systems, their management in the developed and developing worlds, technical issues (now including irrigation and river restoration), and river basin institutions and the way in which they use knowledge. The book provides an integrated holistic treatment of a complex field. The first edition has been widely used as a textbook and professional guide and has helped underline the case for catchment management planning in several countries.
