Land trusts in the USA

Author: Wright, J.B.

Periodical: Land Use Policy
Abstract: In the USA 857 private local and regional conservation groups known as land trusts have protected some 2 million acres of ecologically or scenically important land from incompatible development using voluntary compensating techniques such as conservation easements. Land trust members often see their actions as an alternative to government regulatory planning. This article looks at the history, organization and activities of land trusts and analyses the assets and liabilities of a voluntary approach. Grassroots land trusts are viewed as a highly successful statement of vernacular land policy warranting far greater use by land use planners and development strategists throughout the world.
