Abstract: Understanding tree biology is critical to providing appropriate tree health care. Many people know the basics of what trees need to survive and thrive—water, sunlight, air, elements—but it is important to know how these factors interact in a whole tree. This publication provides tree biology information for readers who are both new and experienced tree stewards. We start with a brief description of cell growth in trees, followed by descriptions of tree anatomy and physiology. We conclude with comments on the tree’s defense system and climate change impacts on tree biology. This information is the basis for improving tree health care with suggestions for further reading at the end of the publication.
