Inside Bushler Bay: Lifeways in counterpoint

Abstract: Bushler Bay is a small, isolated, rural enclave, which over the years has been inundated with a variety of government employees and their families. The characteristics and interactions of the members of these two categories of people-herein called "locals" and "public employees"- are discussed. We then delve into the theoretical ramifications of this internal differentiation. Using the concepts of universalism and particularism, we examine the models of social organization held by the participants themselves; we finally proceed to a discussion of the role of scientific analysis in the conflicts that characterize the relations between Bushler Bay's particularists and universalists.
