Abstract: In this article three issues are selected for examination in detail: first, urban acess to the countryside; secondly, the question of 'second homes'; and thirdly, the issues underlying the spread of forests in upland britain. These topics illustrate the diverse nature of the interface between urban and rural people. Sometimes, as in access problems, one is dealing with a continuous stream of activities and transactions involvong a large number of people for whom some sort of instituional system may be needed to regulate a growing segment of thier social lives. Those directly involved in the second homes question are much fewer in number, and their activity concerns the acquisition of a small portion of rural capital. As one might expect on economic grounds, there are diffuse and permanent effects associated with the servicing and usage of these homes. Forestry involves an even more basic resource of the countryside, but here the participants are not usually private individuals but state corporations and commercial companies. These, however, are finding it increasingly necessary to come to terms with the individual farmer or urban visitor.
