In our own backyard: Conserving urban wildlife

Author: Adams, Lowell W.
Date: 1994
Periodical: Journal of Forestry
Abstract: Conservation of wildlife and habitat in urban areas can help maintain biological diversity-the numerous species of plants and animals found throughout the world -thus reducing the threat of species becoming endangered or possibly extinct. In discussing the importance of maintaining biological diversity, Dennis Murphy (1988) pointed out, "Our urban centers can be viewed as bellwethers of our global environmental fate. Our success at meeting the challenges of protecting biological diversity in urban areas is a good measure of our commitment to protect functioning ecosystems worldwide. If we cannot act as responsible stewards in our own backyards, the long-term prospects for biological diversity in the rest of this planet are grim indeed"
