Homeowner protection efforts can and do work

Author: Cook, Judith Leraas

Abstract: While no home is completely fire safe, all fire managers have seen examples of protection efforts that have paid off. Whether it was vegetation manipulation, thoughtful landscaping, fire-resistant construction materials, or placement of a home away from the top of a ravine, homeowners have shown that they can use good judgment in dealing with wildland fire. Because homeowners have learned skills that will protect them, their homes, and their families if a wildland fire occurs, the fire community has recently begun to refer to those homeowners as "firewise."
