Fires fail to deter Western migrants

Author: Associated Press
Date: 2001
Periodical: The Gainesville Sun
Abstract: Images of last summer's wildfires the worst in 50 years -haven't stopped the steady migration of retirees and commuters into the woods of the West. Retiree Emmett Dosier heard the call, and like other new residents he's learned to live with fire. He and neighbors cut cherished shade trees, cleaned pine needles out of gutters and cleared brush. They were rewarded by having a home to come back to last May after a wildfire swept across a clear-cut area next to their neighborhood. "The work we did for prevention paid off," he said.
