Abstract: Fire is one of the most powerful forces in nature. While its fury may be frightening, fire is essential for a healthy ecosystem. Fire thins the forests so that trees have room to grow, it cleanses the earth and replenishes the soil so that new life may be nourished. Without our intervention, fire completes Mother Nature's perfect recycling process. There is a changing fire environment in California. It's called the urban/wildland interface -- the precarious place where civilization meets nature. Tired of the hustle and bustle of city life, many people are moving into the nearby hills. Others have sought refuge in the untamed wilderness. Urban and rural boundaries have blurred as people enjoy secluded settings and spectacular vistas on the fringes of some of the nation's largest metropolitan areas. The urban/wildland interface is anywhere people build their houses and communities in volatile, fire-prone wildlands - lands where fire is a natural aspect of the environment, its vitality and survival. Living in California means learning to live with fire. As stewards of California's natural resources, citizens must take action to protect themselves from wildfire while maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
