Fire!

Periodical: Pacific Meridian Resources
Abstract: Wildfire frequency is on the rise. So is the damage caused by wildfires, both in acres burned and value of property destroyed. Almost 90,000 wildfires had burned throughout the United States by mid-September, 1996, with half the fire season remaining. That's a 47% increase over the previous five years. These fires burned close to 6,000,000 acres, a 170% increase over the previous five years. With continued development and expansion of subdivisions, the dollar amounts of fire damage will continue to increase in the coming years. To help mitigate the effects of wildfires and allocate scarce resources effectively, fire fighting agencies need a spatial model that can make fire growth predictions for specific locations and for complex, heterogeneous landscapes.
