| Abstract: |
The publication of the National Agricultural Lands Study (NALS) in 1981 was followed by journal articles and newspaper reports that posed the question: "Where have the farmlands gone?" Some of these articles expressed concern about the decrease in the amount of farmland and the adverse effects upon the nation's capacity to produce food and fiber. On the other hand, some critics of the NALS have questioned the data and the conclusions of that study. This debate raised the following question: To what extent is there a farmland crisis in fact? To help try to find an answer to this question the major arguments and conclusions of fact on both sides of the issue must be reviewed. |
