Abstract: Think back to your childhood. Where did you play? How did you get around? What are your most vivid memories of these places? Can you still sense the smells, sights, and sounds of those places? Why do you think these memories have remained? We all have strong experiences of places; they originate from the city sidewalks, the suburban yard, and the back 40 acres of the farm. They shape who we are and who we will become. "If you don't know where you are," says Wendell Berry, "you don't know who you are." An ecological, social, cultural, and historical identity all contribute to one's sense of place.
