Abstract: Environmental issues related to urban sprawl in forested areas include clean air, clean water, aesthetics and open space, public safety and protection of public property, and restriction on timber harvesting and silvicultural practices. Population pressures for development cause fragmentation of property ownerships as well as the fragmentation of open space. In this paper the spread of local ordinances will be examined, and conservation easements as one land use control to slow the fragmentation of open space inherent in urban sprawl will be discussed from the perspective of the landowner.
