Effects of septic tank systems on environmental quality

Author: Viraraghavan, T.
Periodical: Journal of Environmental Management
Abstract: Septic tank systems are used for disposal of domestic wastewater on farms and in aural, suburban and isolated areas in many parts of the world. Environmental impact of septic tank systems is reviewed. Water quality changes that occur in the soil system, especially with reference to nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, are presented. Travel of micro-organisms from the septic tile system in the context of possible health hazards is discussed. The environmental effects of septage (septic tank sludge) disposal are indicated.
