Ecosystems of Florida

Author: Myers, R.L.; Ewel, J.J., eds.

Abstract: The objective of this book is to introduce the reader to the ecology of Florida's landscape: its forests, fresh waters, marshes, and marine life. Chapter 1 introduces Florida and the book, and chapters 2, 3, and 4 deal with topics that are fundamental to all ecosystems: climate, soil, and biogeography. Each of the next thirteen chapters explores a particular type of community, and we end with a brief overview of some important conservation and environmental issues. The ecosystem chapters are arranged from high ground to low ground, from terrestrial to aquatic, and from fresh water to salt water. We hope that our readers can visualize the continua that exist among these categories. If we have done our job, the glimmer of Florida past, the reality of Florida today, and the prospect of Florida tomorrow will be apparent.
