Abstract: The goal of this manual is to illustrate how development objectives and natural resource protection needs within a high-growth area can be addressed through the physical design of residential projects. It is recognized that the changes development brings to an area are so strong and pervasive that no natural system can retain the same character it would have had if development were not present at all. At the same time, it is possible – with use of what we know about ecological processes – to intentionally design projects so that they contribute to the preservation of an area’s most important attributes and help maintain the health of the ecosystems in which thay are located.
