Designing with the land

Abstract: There are many success stories of how principles of soil and water conservation have been applied to create better urban environments. But we need more people who care about land and water in the countryside to care about land and water in cities too. The fate of our cities and the fate of our countryside are linked. Society is turning its back on the city, abandoning hundreds of thousands of acres that are already serviced by roads, sewer, water, gas, and electric even by public transportation, in order build new cities on prime agricultural land. This is madness. It is time for those of who care about restoring the land to embrace the city as well as the countryside. It is only through the care and cultivation of both that we will survive.
