Conservation easements: An analysis of donated development rights

Author: Wright, John B.
Date: 1993
Periodical: Journal of American Planning Association. Chicago, IL: American Planning Association
Abstract: Donated conservation easements protect over one million acres in the United States from development. Planners, however, are poorly informed about the characteristics and applications of this tool. This article defines conservation easements, traces their history, and explains the easement acquisition process. It also outlines the advantages and disadvantages of donated easements and discusses how planners can best use the technique.
