As the economy grows, the trees fall

Abstract: Washington is losing much of its distinctive green space to development at a prodigious rate. Vast tracts of farmland and forests are being swallowed up, plowed under, smoothed out and paved over for sprawling residential subdivisions, jumbo retail stores and shopping malls, with roadways and ocasional office parks crammed or sprinkled in between.
