Abstract: As a part of this effort, on March 22, 1995,The Brookings Institution, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the National Trust for Historic Preservation cosponsored a day-long conference entitled 'Alternatives to Sprawl.' The speakers represented a wide range of expertise, affiliation and opinion. Their comments, ideas, research findings and recommendations are summarized in the following pages. We hope they may serve as a resource for private citizens and public officials in making informed choices about the future growth patterns of the cities, towns and countryside where we all live.
