Abstract: The impact of population density on agricultural productivity in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas is assessed using an aggregate production function. The concept of agglomeration economies is used to explain the relationships among population density, proximity to metropolitan areas and agricultural productivity. Regression results indicate that the technical efficiency of farming operations is disadvantaged in more densely populated areas.
