Residential expansion into the wildlands affects the ability of state, local and federal agencies to redeem their fire management, responsibilities. Still, many fire managers ask themselves "should we be involved in community land use planning, is that an appropriate arena for fire agencies?" A more appropriate question might be "how can we afford not to be?"
