University of California Davis Campus Tree Resource Analysis

Reference Type
Report (Research or Project)

This analysis described structural characteristics of the campus tree population and used tree growth data to assess the benefits trees afford the campus community. In addition, future management and research priorities are identified. Our approach is based on new research and established statistical methods, with the intent of providing baseline data for canopy cover management and a general accounting of the benefits produced by campus trees. This report highlights the value of the campus tree resource, and provides a first step towards developing a long-term management and monitoring program. [from Technical Report conclusions]

[This report includes a discussion of a new tree health analysis tool.] Dr. Qingfu Xiao and GIS tech, Chad Delany, recently created a way to visually represent the health of individual trees. [The] first-ever findings on tree health are presented on page 22 [of this report]. According to Dr. Xiao, the pixel level GIS layer can be examined at a resolution fine enough to locate problem areas within the crown of individual trees. The whole tree analysis is coarser, differentiated between individual crowns only." [from CUFR News Brief, December 2004]
