Urban FIA - Whats in it for Cities and Arborists?

A presentation on Urban FIA at the 2018 ISA Southern Chapter Conference in Memphis.

FIA is the USDA FS’s Forest Inventory and Analysis program.

This presentation is an introduction to Urban FIA (and FIA as the basis for UFIA) for municipal urban foresters and arborists focusing on how Urban FIA data can be used in your community.

Recognizing the importance of including all urban trees and forests in the nation’s forest census, the U.S. Forest Service, together with state and local cooperators, is working towards a systematic approach for collecting and reporting data on the status and trends of urban trees and forests as detailed in the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill (8301 subparagraph 2).

Urban FIA Goal: Annually monitor the forests of all our census defined urban areas with a special emphasis in the largest (i.e. iconic) cities of America.
