City of Pineville Urban Forestry Survey

Reference Type
Report (Research or Project)

This report outlines the opinions of Pineville, LA residents regarding the importance of trees in their city.

A telephone survey was conducted in Pineville, LA (pop. 14,000) in autumn 2007 to determine citizens’ awareness level regarding their urban forest and issues relating to the natural resources of the area. Pineville is a small city in Central Louisiana across the Red River from the larger city, Alexandria. It has recently experienced an increase in economic development and population. Preliminary interviews taken after a town meeting explaining a recently-conducted natural resource assessment indicated that the Pineville Tree Board should be involved with education of homeowners, developers, and city officials regarding the urban forest. The survey queried 300 residents of Pineville about various current issues the city faces regarding development including urban forest management awareness, knowledge of urban forest benefits, how they get their information regarding tree care and natural resource issues, and what the best method is for them to receive and use natural resource information. This information will be used to develop a protocol for other small communities in the south to acquire information regarding their natural resources.
