An approach for using soil surveys to guide the placement of water quality buffers
Riparian forest buffers may function better in some locations than in others for filtering pollutants out of agricultural runoff water. A simple method was developed for using information contained in soil surveys to identify better locations for filtering sediment and dissolved pollutants from surface and groundwater flow. The method provides an estimate of how well a buffer would work in each soil map unit. The mapped results can guide managers to locations where protection and installation of buffers would yield greater water quality benefits.

Think globally, eat locally. A ready supply of fruit is more than just healthy. Community orchards may be part of the solution to helping reduce our footprint in several ways. For starters, having locally grown food nearby supports the immediate economy, saves a drive to the store, and less fossil fuel is burned. Combine community gardens with homeowners in low-income neighborhoods and you have a community-building, social-network-building, crime-fighting unit on your hands.

Park Access and Environmental Equity
Many newly transplanted Latinos living in older parts of towns in the South, do not have access to parks. This is an important issue for urban foresters, park managers, and city planners since urban parks may be the only natural resource available to newly settled lower income residents who may not own cars or have access to good public transportation.

Proposal For Urban Forest Health Monitoring in The United States

Proposed Release of Three Parasitoids for the Biological Control of Emerald Ash Borer in the Continental United States
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant HealthInspection Service (APHIS) and Forest Service (FS) are proposing torelease three insect parasitoid species for the biological control(biocontrol) of the nonindigenous emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilusplanipennis). This environmental assessment (EA) has been prepared, consistent with USDA, APHIS' National Environmental Policy Act(NEPA) implementing procedures (Title 7 of the Code of FederalRegulations (CFR), part 372). It examines the potential effects on thequality of the human environment that may be associated with the releaseof these biocontrol agents to control infestations of EAB within thecontinental United States. This EA considers the potential effects of theproposed action and its alternatives, including no action.
Protecting and Developing the Urban Tree Canopy: A 135-City Survey
Trees make important contributions to society and are an integral part of urban infrastructure, as critical to the health and livability of communities as roads, sewers, and buildings. Mayors recognize the invaluable role of urban forests in the protection of public health and reduction of harmful greenhouse gases. We surveyed our members to establish a baseline of information on their current community tree efforts; with this report, we are pleased to share that baseline of information with all mayors and all others dedicated to protecting and expanding the c
